Top events in Belarus in 2016

The year 2016was full of different events: political, economic, social, sporting and cultural. There was everything during these 366 days: challenges, triumphs, achievements and joyful moments. Nevertheless,it was a special and unique year. Which events will come up in the memory of Belarusians when they remember the year 2016?

Belarusian People's CongressIt takes place traditionally every five years. The fifth and the latest session of the Belarusian People's Congresstook place in 2016. Some 2,500 delegates attended the event. The forum brought together people from all walks of life: from blue-collar and rural workers, students, pensioners, military to officials and economists. 
The result of this general brainstorm was the program of social and economic development of Belarus for 2016-2020.

Parliamentary elections. A total of 110 members were elected to the new parliament. Of them, 38 are women and 72 are men. The upper house, or the Council of the Republic, was also updated. MPs of the sixth convocation have already managed to hold the first session.

Redenomination. On July 1, 2016, Belarus denominated the national currency at 10,000 to 1 ratio. The notes of the 2000 design were gradually replaced with notes and coins of the 2009 design. However, Belarusians got used to them quickly. And by the way,31 December was the last day when you could pay with old bills. Now if you still have old bills, you can go to any bank to exchange them for new money free of charge.

Retirement age increase. It is also a decision of 2016. From 1 January 2017, the retirement threshold will increase gradually - by six months per year, until it reaches 63 years for men and 58 years for women. 

Belarusian doctors conducted a complex “heart-lung”transplant surgery for the first time. This surgery is considered in transplantology as the most complicated one. The surgery lasted nine hours. It was led by the academician Yuri Ostrovsky.

Multiple Launch Rocket PolonezThe latest product of the Belarusian defense industry is the long-range multiple launch rocket system Polonez entered into service. Its destruction rangeis 50-200km with deviation from specified coordinates staying under 30m.

Belintersat-1 satellite launch. The first Belarusian telecommunication satellite Belintersat-1 was launched from the Xichang space launch facility in China. Oleg Novitsky, meanwhile, went to the International Space Stationand delivered there a Belarusian flag. This is the second space mission of the Belarusian.

Belarus was hit by a strong storm in July. Almost 640 settlements were left without electricity. The consequences of the storm weredestroyed homes, water flows and uprooted century-old trees. The most large-scale disaster in the entire history of forestry in Belarus. Almost 13,000 hectares of woodland was destroyed.The wind was so strong that it moved aircraft at the airport, broke shields and billboards.

Olympic Games in Rio. Belarusians took nine medals, including one gold. Paralympians won ten medals, including six gold by famous Belarusian swimmer Igor Boki. There is one more loud sports news of the year. Belarus was elected to host the Second European Games. They will be held in 2019.

Belarusian famous champions Darya Domracheva and Victoria Azarenka became mothers in 2016. Nevertheless, both have promised to soon return to the sport and to continue their winning tradition.

In the Year of Culture, The International Festival of Arts Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk celebrated the 25th anniversary. The forum brought together almost 5,000 participants from 45 countries.
