Alexander Mikulich, head of the laboratory "Minsk planetarium" has explained why the planetarium appreciates new and old projection equipment.
Alexander Mikulich, head of the laboratory "Minsk planetarium":
Modern planetariums switch to digital technologies. Computers have appeared and we can use digital projectors. We've recently purchased such projection technology: we now have a new service - full-dome projection, we demonstrate full-dome spherical movies.
It is very colorful: immersive and all in 3D.
Yet, these projectors cannot reach the required quality of the projection of the starry sky. Still, if the stars are projected using these technologies, they are like a bunch of pixels. And it is wrong to give up the old equipment and to change it all to digital projection. Although modern planetariums already refuse from opto-mechanical, expensive equipment. Another disadvantage is that it also has to be located in the center of the hall.
Therefore, it is simply thrown away and changed for a full-dome digital projection.
However, it cannot achieve the quality of the starry sky that we had thanks to that old equipment.
