Spain and Belarus getting closer: Belarus embassy opens in Madrid

Ambassadors came to Belarus and presented their credentials to Alexander Lukashenko, the President of the Republic of Belarus. A new Belarusian ambassador to Spain will present himself to the King of Spain soon. The foundations of this have been laid down already. Belarus’ diplomatic opportunities were discussed in Madrid and it was obvious that Belarus was of interest to Spain.

Spain has great history of a colonial empire that found the way to America. Though colonial time has already passed, Spain is one of the largest countries in Europe. It has overcome the worst of world economic crisis and nowadays its GDP is one of the highest in the EU – 3%.

Yevgeny Shestakov, Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus:
Politically, Spain is an influential member of the EU. The turnover between Spain and Belarus reached almost $500 million  in better days.

The fact of Spain’s presidency over the UN Security Council emphasizes its political authority.

Miguel Angel Ruiz de Azúa Antón, Dean of National College of Political and Social Sciences (Spain):
We will hand over the UN Security Council’s reigns to a successor country at the end of December. Nevertheless, this position is very important for Spain.

Spain plays a great role in the world, but there has never been the embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Madrid. After 25 years of close diplomatic relations, the inauguration of the embassy of Belarus in Spain finally took place.

Luis Fraga, People’s Party of Spain member:
It’s important that Belarus decided to inaugurate its embassy in Spain. Our bilateral affairs begin now and they will enhance in political, economic and cultural spheres.

A concert of the choir of Belarusian State Academy of Music students was held on this occasion in Chinchón near Madrid.

Moreover, an exhibition of Orthodox icons was organized in the city of Toledo, the capital of Iberia.

We have really united Belarusian and Spanish art.

The occasion aroused media interest: 21 Spanish periodicals covered the inauguration of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the Kingdom of Spain.
