Alexander Khatskevich has resigned as head coach of the national football team of Belarus. The management of the football federation decided to terminate the contract. The reason is the poor performance of the team in the qualifying tournament for the World Cup 2018 in Russia.
The manager was proposed a pay cut since the team had not achieved the goals but Khatskevich decided not to accept the deal. As a result, the contract was terminated unilaterally.
Khatskevich became head coach of Belarus in December 2014. At the finish of the Euro 2016 qualifiers, Belarus then celebrated promising victories over FYR Macedonia, Luxembourg and Slovakia and was defeated by favorites Spain and Ukraine.
The WC 2018 qualification, however, was far from successful for Belarusians: they drew against France, which was quite a good start, but then went down to the Netherlands and drew at home against underdogs Luxembourg.
The former head coach of the federation was also criticized for lack of a systematic approach in tactics and player selection.
