Stanisław Karczewski: Interparliamentary cooperation improves Belarus-Poland relations

Belarus expects to begin an active dialogue with Poland, said President Alexander Lukashenko on December 5 as he met with Marshal of the Senate of the State Stanisław Karczewski.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established nearly a quarter of a century ago. In recent years, the political dialogue has revitalized. The level of trade and economic cooperation is also high enough. During the first 9 months of 2016, the trade turnover amounted to more than $1.5 billion.

Poland is also among the top ten countries investing in the Belarusian economy. But there is still much work ahead. In April 2016, a bilateral parliamentary group was formed in the Sejm of Poland.

According to Alexander Lukashenko, without people's diplomacy, it is very difficult to build political and economic relations.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
In recent years, we have had active political dialogue. Your major political leaders visited Minsk, we have been to Poland, too, I mean the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other officials. We negotiated. We tried to take our relations to a higher level. I must say that the foundation of any relationship is trade and economic relations. We have a very high level of our trade and economic relations. But it absolutely does not correspond to our capabilities. I think that we have a lot of work here. You can absolutely rely on the fact that there can be no forbidden topics in our relations. We will be always open. With regard to parliamentary cooperation, I know you have created a Belarusian-Polish group in your parliament. We are also forming a corresponding group in the new parliament. Without people's diplomacy, without a parliamentary dimension, it is very difficult to build political and economic relations in the modern world.

Stanisław Karczewski, Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland:
I would like to emphasize the importance of our meeting. I recently met with the Speaker of the Parliament of Sweden, who is very well acquainted with Mikhail Myasnikovich. He asked me to convey greetings and the best wishes for Belarus. Our inter-parliamentary cooperation is very important, because it affects not only the improvement of the relations, but also the improvement of the very atmosphere between the two countries.
