During the visit of President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the opening ceremony of the Cathedral Mosque will be held in Minsk. It will happen on Friday because Friday is a holiday for Muslims.
The first mosque existed in Minsk since the end of the 16th century. However, it was closed in 1949. A new mosque has been constructed for 10 years. Today, people can enjoy the building of the Cathedral Mosque at the crossroads of Griboedova and Ignatenko Streets.
The Cathedral Mosque can host about 1500 people during a Friday prayer.
Mufti Abu Shekir Shabanovich, chairman of the Muslim Religious Association in the Republic of Belarus:
There isn’t a mosque in Minsk. There were those temporary buildings that weren’t satisfying for worshipers. Thus, so many people came to a Friday mandatory collective prayer that they couldn’t fit into those domestic premises. And now, we have such conditions! Of course, people will come from everywhere. Let the temple perform one of the most important functions: uniting people, their understanding of peace, good relations with people. Let it sow the good seed.
