IOC deprives two Belarusian weightlifters of 2008 Olympic medals

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has stripped Belarusian weightlifters Andrei Rybakov and Anastasia Novikova of medals of the 2008 Summer Olympics for the use of banned drugs. The relevant decision was published on the official website of the IOC.

In 2008, Andrei Rybakov won the silver award in the category up to 85 kg. Anastasia Novikova scooped bronze medal in the category of up to 53 kg.

The athletes are deprived of the awards as a result of rechecking doping tests. The tests of Andrei Rybakov contained turinabol, while in the sample of Anastasia Novikova turinabol and stanozolol. Previously it was reported on the disqualification of Anastasia Novikova for four years, who, after the World Cup 2015 in Houston, was convicted of using banned drugs.

The Beijing Olympic medals were taken from Ukrainian weightlifter Olga Korobka, Russian Ekaterina Volkova, Kazakhstani Taymuraz Tigiyev, Soslan Tigiev of Uzbekinstan and Azerbaijani Sardar Hasan.

"The athletes must as promptly as possible return the medals to the IOC," the message reads.
