Belarus to produce unique protein from transgenic goats' milk

The Academy of Sciences of Belarus on October 26 opened a laboratory for extraction and purification of human lactoferrin from the milk of transgenic goats. The new site will appear in the Institute of Microbiology.

Within the framework of a Belarus-Russia Union State program, Belarusian and Russian scientists have for the first time in the world created unique herds of animals.

Having introduced a human protein gene into the DNA of goats the scientists got a herd of goats whose milk has more lactoferrin than in women's milk.

Lactoferrin is used in the manufacture of dietary supplements, dietetic food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. A gram of this substance is very expensive. Its price on the world market reaches a few thousand U.S. dollars.
