Development of economic cooperation and visa regime facilitation: Belarus’ Foreign Minister visits Warsaw

Rapprochement and openness. Principles of cooperation of Belarus and Poland were discussed on October 10 by the foreign ministers of the two countries.

A quarter of a century ago a Declaration on Good-neighborliness, mutual recognition and co-operation between the states was signed. Now Belarus and Poland are on the threshold of a new quality of relations.

Belarus and Poland were involved in diplomatic relations for two decades. They weren’t developing all the time. However, in 2016, the relations between two countries became stronger after relations between Belarus and the EU had improved. Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei met with President of Poland Andrzej Duda and Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski.

Vladimir Makei, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus:
Our conversation was very open and we weren’t hiding from each other some problematic questions that are still present in our relations. We were trying to work out solutions for these problems.

Politicians and journalist like to mention the common border and history of Belarus and Poland. Two countries are also connected by the Augustów Canal. Belarus has already abolished the visa for tourists who want to visit the Augustów Canal.

Witold Waszczykowski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland:
A few years ago we signed an agreement with Belarus on local border traffic. We are ready to come to an understanding, but we need some more technical harmonization - reforms at border crossings. We've been talking for many years, we are ready to support Belarus, we are ready to upgrade the crossing points that connect us.

Poland is interested in Belarusian health resorts. First agreements with Belarus’ health resorts were signed this year.

Moreover, politicians, economists and experts are saying that now is the perfect time to strengthen the relations between Belarus and Poland.
