Heart of city: Story of Minsk citadel of XII-XIII centuries and future plans

Minsk is constantly changing. In 2004, thank to the findings of archeologists and preserved documents, the Minsk City Hall was restored in its initial appearance. Today, there is a public garden right beside it as it was several centuries ago. Behind the City Hall, people can find a bailiff holding the keys from the city and a charter.

In 2017, there will be a reconstruction in Komsomolskaya Street and Revolutsionaya Street. New roads and the lightning, sculptures and fountains will appear there. The Rakovsky suburb will undergo some changes too. It is planned to build a mixed-use complex. In addition, the Minsk citadel will be recreated and will become the main architectural landmark of Minsk.

Sergei Tarasov, architect, Candidate of Historical Sciences:
The Minsk citadel was the center of an ancient city, a castle that was built in XI- XII centuries.

This part of modern Minsk was being explored in 1947. There were archeological excavations conducted in the 60s and 80s. There were a lot of unique findings. There were remnants of a church and remnants of the main castle. Archeologists were able to find streets and houses of ancient Minsk.

According to archeologists, the cultural layer that lies in this territory might be up to 8 meters. The citadel was a fortress and a city center of ancient Minsk.

Sergei Tarasov, architect, Candidate of Historical Sciences:
This is the heart of the city and the beginning of it. It is also an archeological monument .Thus, first, we need to save it, then we need to explore it and to establish a museum, so that people visiting Minsk would be able to see where Minsk started.

The Minsk citadel was destroyed, but we have a chance to it as it used to be. It is planned to create national historical and archeological center Minsk Citadel. There will be a fragment of the city of the XII century where people could walk and feel the atmosphere of ancient Minsk. In addition, there will be a museum where people can get acquainted with the history of Minsk. The amphitheatre will be constructed near the museum.

The Minsk Citadel will become a tourist attraction, that’s why there will be a parking lot for visitors’ vehicles.

These are our plans, but the most important idea is that we have a lot of things to remember and be proud of.
