Alexander Lukashenko: I don’t think that there’s Belarusian who criticizes government for multifaceted approach

This morning, the President has taken part in the parliamentary elections. Belarus’ President came together with his younger son Nikolai to the polling station located in the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture. A lot of journalists were waiting for the President. After Alexander Lukashenko put the bulletin into the box, he answered the questions of the journalists.

About 15 questions were asked within an hour. The President was very open and even was making jokes. The journalists were interested about Minsk’s relations with Brussels. The President underlined that Belarus develops the relations with the West without any consequences for the relations with the East.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
We, Slavic people (Belarusians, Russians, Ukrainians), have it in our blood to live in peace and harmony with our neighbors, not to make unnecessary “surprises”, not to burden them. Also, we have multifaceted politics. I don’t think there is a Belarusian who will criticize the government for this approach. That’s because we live in the center of Europe. Our brothers live in the East. We will always be together with these people. You know, we can agree with each other or disagree, but we will always be together because we have the same roots. It’s my strong believe. The West is very technologically developed, and the trade that we have with the West is larger by 2% than the trade with Russia. Our economy and trade is our life. We have an open economy, so we sell about 75% of the things we produce. To be competitive on the market, we need modern technologies and investments. Where are these investments? Not only in the East but also in the West. Only the West has necessary technologies. That’s why we have this interest. We learn a lot from them. Thank God, they are also learning something from us. We are situated between these monsters, the EU and Russia. There is also China (we are on friendly terms with this country). Thus, we have to play this part. It is written in the stars.
