Alexander Lukashenko: preparation system of Belarusian ice hockey players needs changes

The preparation system of Belarusian ice hockey players needs changes. President Alexander Lukashenko announced it during the meeting with President of the International Ice Hockey Federation Rene Fasel. Belarus’ Presedent commented on the qualification match where Belarus was defeated by Slovenia, thus losing the opportunity to participate in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
In 2-3 years, we can’t do it at once, we will take care of all sports in Belarus, especially ice hockey. And we will deal with all people who, as people say in Belarus, are full of themselves. I understand it all very well. It’s not connected with the match that they lost. In my opinion, it was meant to be like this, because we all remember how the Belarusian team was playing at the World Championship in May, 2016. Instead of training hard and preparing for these matches during the summer, they, probably, were having holidays in southern countries. That’s why we have what we have. Those who wanted to win and go to the Olympics won. Trust me, I was disappointed but not as much as it may appear, because, firstly, I knew what could happen. Secondly, it’s better that they are not going to the Olympics this year, than to sit in front of the TV and kick ourselves because of the game they show today. I don’t think that something would drastically change in a year.

We are significantly losing to foreign athletes in terms of the strategy and concept. We should pay attention to the system of preparation of Belarusian athletes, following the experience of Canadians and Americans, because they have different ice hockey. We are starting to lag behind, and we are playing in the old-fashioned way. Especially, if we speak about ice hockey. Human resources are playing essential role. That’s why I already instructed people to pay special attention to the staff that is working in the sports industry, especially in ice hockey.

Alexander Lukashenko thanked Rene Fazel for the attention of the International Ice Hockey Federation to Belarus. During the meeting, the possibility of holding the Ice Hockey World Championship in Belarus was discussed.

Rene Fazel, president of the International Ice Hockey Federation:
We are considering the possibility of holding the 2021-2022 Ice Hockey World Championship in Belarus. That’s why we have the same goals. You have six years to prepare your team. The special attention should be paid to a younger generation at the age of 15-22.
