Slovenia beats Belarus to earn 2018 Winter Olympics ice hockey berth

The Belarusian ice hockey team in a tense fight lost to Slovenia in the Winter Olympics 2018 qualification. The result of this match was not known until the last moment. The teams played on equal terms and could not determine the winner in regulation time (2:2) and even in the overtime. In the shootout Slovenes were luckier.

Minsk during these four days turned into something resembling an Olympic venue. Belarusians, Danes, Poles and Slovenes fought for a single ticket to the 2018 Olympics.

The head of the referee board of the International Ice Hockey Federation visited Minsk Arena during the tournament.

Alfred Reicher, head of the referee board of the International Ice Hockey Federation:
The arena is ready to accept a tournament of such a level. All the perfectly organized: ice, locker rooms, and navigation. Everything is very compact and convenient. Lovely hotels and service. Therefore we don't have any complaints.

Danish goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm discovered Belarus back in 2004. Next meeting with Minsk was during the World Hockey Championship.

Sebastian Dahm, goaltender of Denmark national ice hockey team:
I like it very much here. Friendly people. The city is very clean, beautiful. We can make ourselves at home here. Last time my friend Kevin Lalande gave me a tour of the city, he plays for your team. It is a pity that we did not have enough time. I want to know more about this city.

The Polish team spent Minsk City Day on September 3 in the city during festivities.

Michael Cichy, Polish striker:
Everything is great. I like this city, it resembles New York. And I think the most important thing is what we will take from this city. For me this is impressions about people. All matches here in Minsk were sellouts.

During the tournament Belarus won against Denmark 5:2 and Poland 5:3 but stumbled in the last game. Slovenians scored two goals in the shootout, while Belarus did not score in the third attempt, to the great disappointment of Minsk Arena.

Anže Kopitar, Slovenian striker:
I know that Belarusian fans are very passionate. They love ice hockey. Your country really loves ice hockey.
