Belarus beat Denmark in 2018 Olympic ice hockey qualifier

The Belarusian team have outplayed Denmark in the opening game of the 2018 Winter Olympic ice hockey qualifying. Belarus' Minsk Arena in Minsk is hosting the competition, which winner will get the right to play at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018.

The Scandinavians brought the best squad to Minsk but this did not help them against Belarus. Coach Dave Lewis' team won a very important victory 5:2, though made fans nervous after conceding first.

Goalscorers for the Belarusian team were Alexander Pavlovich, Artyom Volkov, Sergei Kostitsyn (twice) and Andrei Stas.

Dave Lewis, head coach of Belarusian national ice hockey team:
Danes are a very strong and fast team, and it is clear since they have so many players from the NHL, including the goaltender. But our Kevin Lalande played superbly today. Perhaps his performance is one the main factors that allowed us to turn the game around.

Kevin Lalande, goaltender of the Belarusian national ice hockey team:
I played well, but I cannot name myself man of the match, because everyone showed their worth. We felt confident in defense and in attack and created a lot of chances.

On the first day, Poland lost to Slovenia 1:6 in the same group. Anže Kopitar from NHL side Los Angeles Kings scored three times. Belarus meets Poland on September 2 and then two days later take on Slovenia in a decider.
