Number of law infringements down in Belarus in H1 2016

The Belarus President met with the Attorney General to discuss the crime situation in the country. Alexander Konyuk reported that crime rates have reduced. Moreover, this trend has continued over the past five years. Alexander Lukashenko asked about the work of the prosecutor general's office in the new environment. Recently Belarus has conducted a profound reform of the law enforcement system.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
I am interested in the work of the prosecutor general's office for this period of time. How is it working in the new conditions after the reform and structural changes? Here we have the head of the Investigative Committee, he will express his point of view. I know that there are some contradictions between the structures. I would like you to tell me this in an open way. We will make appropriate decisions to avoid differences in the future. I see that they are not catastrophic, so we will discuss them and immediately make a decision.

The results of the work of law enforcement agencies in general can be evaluated positively. For the 6 months of 2016 the number of offenses has decreased compared to the same period last year. Every year we are seeing decreasing numbers of grave crimes.

Alexander Konyuk, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Belarus:
For me, what is more important? It is important that fewer people die from homicide. This is very important. If the number of crimes of this kind has decreased, then this is a positive trend, which has been in force for the last 5 years. The tendency is that the number of crimes is reducing. But we must understand that it will not be permanent. It is necessary, in general, to be ready for this, to carry out preventive work in this regard.
