Belarusian basketball team beat hosts Brazil 65:63 at Olympics

The Belarusian basketball players have got the first victory at the Olympics in Rio! In the third game of the group round of the Olympic tournament manager Anatoly Buyalsky's Belarus beat the hosts Brazilians 65:63.

The meeting did not begin well for the national team of Belarus. In the middle of the second quarter our team was behind 20:38. The coach was forced to take a time-out and drew attention to errors in the defense. The game went better smoothly and by the big break the Belarusian girls were just five points behind.

The last two quarters were much better for the Belarusians who were more confident and closed the gap. Four minutes before the final whistle they led 65:63. Brazil had time to hold another attack but competent defensive play by Belarus stopped them.

The top scorers for Belarus in this game were Tatyana Troina (18 points), Elena Levchenko (15), Lindsey Harding (12) and Tatiana Likhtarovich (10).

Troina: "Thank you all! Now go to bed and have a sleep!"

The next match for Belarusians is on August 11 against the Turkish national team.

In the opening match Belarus women's national basketball team lost to the Japanese team 73:77. In the second game, Belarus again gave way to one of the favorites of the tournament France - 72:73. The victory against Brazil was important for our team: to save the real chance to fight for the playoffs Belarus had to win.

Brazilians earlier lost to Australia (66:84) and Japan (66:82).
