Belarus go down to Japan in Olympic basketball tournament

The basketball players of the women's team of Belarus went off to a bad start at the preliminary stage of the Olympic Games.

In the first match of qualifying Group A Anatoly Buyalsky's Belarus met with Japan's team and lost 73:77 (21:26, 19:15, 20:19, 13:17). At first, Belarus had ball possession and led but eventually finished the first half one point behind 40:41.

In the second half of the match, the game was quite even again but Japan, in a dramatic ending, did manage to win the match. 

Elena Levchenko scored 15 points, while Ekaterina Snytina collected 14.

Belarusians hold the next match on Monday against the French team, who were stronger than Turkey 55:39. In another match of the first round, the Australian team won against hosts Brazil 84:66.
