Both Belarusian clubs draw Europa League third qualifying round first legs

FC Dinamo Minsk, in an away game, as well as Torpedo Zhodino at home, have drawn their first legs of the 3rd qualifying round of the 2016/17 Europa League.

In the game in Serbia's Novi Sad against Vojvodina Sergei Borovsky's Dinamo Minsk conceded on 29 minutes and could not reply for a long time. Only at the end of the match, when less than 10 minutes remained before the final whistle, Ukrainian striker Yevgeny Budnik equalized with a stunning shot for a 1-1 scoreline giving his team an away goal advantage prior to the second leg.

Zhodino's FC Torpedo-BelAZ took on Austrian Rapid from Vienna and also drew 0-0. The Zhodino team looked bleak, with only Rapid having possession and creating chances.

The second legs will be played on 4 August, Dinamo having more chances than Torpedo for the qualification playoff. The winner of that playoff will then get into the group round of the Europa League, the second most important football club tournament in Europe.

In the Champions League, Belarus’ FC BATE Borisov, in the opening match of the 3rd qualification round, beat guests from the Irish Dundalk 1-0 at Borisov Arena. The winning goal was scored by Mikhail Gordeychuk, who converted from a pass of veteran Alexander Hleb.

The return match will be held in Dundalk on August 2. The winner of the two-legged match will enter at least the Europa League group stage or, if it is victorious in the qualification playoff, will get into the Champions League group stage.
