Minsk resident reshaping endangered Osmolovka neighborhood

In just one day, a new metropolitan masterpiece was born in the Minsk neighborhood of Osmolovka (Asmalouka). The idea belongs to the talented artist, designer and architect Maria Rudakovskaya who is taking part in a variety of urban projects in the Belarus capital.

Maria Rudakovskaya, artist, architect:
It is not only art, but also the meaning. If the work makes at least one passer-by stop and think for a while, I deem my task partially accomplished. I think this project is on the verge of social art. In fact, the process is more important than the result.

Masha decided to take part in the first project "City" to help make its residents a little happier. The city authorities have repeatedly stated that Osmolovka should be reconstructed in accordance with modern city structure.

However, Minsk local officials do not rule out that Osmolovka will acquire the status of a historical site and thus the post-WWII quarter in the city center will be kept without any changes.

Maria's graffiti depicts one single tree among the many high-rise buildings. The tree needs to be looked after, preserved and watered. Its "branches" are covered with lovely two-story Osmolovka houses.

Maria Rudakovskaya, artist, architect:
I generally like old places filled with their own atmosphere. I like places near Gorky Park, near Pulichava Street. When I first saw Osmolovka, I really liked it here. I wanted to show the spirit of the area. We painted this wall together with residents. I allowed them to improvise in some way, and they painted many more windows than I initially planned on the sketches. Then I added some finishing touches myself. To be continued.

Mary recognizes that Minsk lacks bright colors and she is very glad that Minsk is becoming more colorful thanks to such festivals as Urban Myths and Vulica Brazil. This makes Minsk part of European street art movement.

Maria Rudakovskaya, artist, architect:
I like a lot of things from foreign street art. I do not even know all the authors whose works I like. But maybe Banksy is the best. He is a person, the Artist from the capital letter.
