Belarus beat Nigeria in basketball Olympic qualification

The Belarusian women's basketball team began the Olympic qualifying tournament in the French Nantes with a victory.

In the opening match of group C coach Anatoly Buyalsky's Belarus won against Nigeria 71:60 (14:14, 24:18, 20:13, 13:15). Nigeria began well and were ahead for the majority of the 1st quarter.

In the second period the Belarusian basketball players played more confident, made fewer mistakes and as a result had a 6-point advantage - 38:32 - prior to the big break.

The two final quarters were also marked by Belarusians' advantage. Elena Levchenko was the best in Belarus' squad, with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Belarus play the next game on 15 June against South Korea, who meet Nigeria on June 14.

If Belarusians occupy one of the first two places, they will play in the quarter-finals against one of group D sides. On June 13, China confidently beat Venezuela 77:59 (20:16, 22: 8, 24:13, 11:22). On Tuesday, June 14, the Chinese meet Spain.

After the first phase, the two best teams will continue to fight for the five tickets to Rio de Janeiro. The quarterfinals will be held on 17 June. Their winners immediately get Olympic tickets, while the four losers will play a mini-tournament on June 18-19 to determine the fifth team to qualify for the Olympics.
