FIFA's Gianni Infantino may visit Belarus in September 2016

The visit to Minsk of the new President of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, could take place in September, first deputy chairman of the association "Belarusian Football Federation" (ABFF) Sergei Safaryan told media.

The Belarusian side has recently received an official response from FIFA, which says that Gianni Infantino may arrive in the Belarusian capital in the third quarter of 2016. Sergei Safaryan noted that the most likely dates are in September. In the summer months, the FIFA President is very busy with other important matters.

Gianni Infantino may be present in Minsk at the opening of the football academy, which construction is coming to the final stage. According to the plans, work on the construction of the new facility not far from the House of Football in the Vesnianka neighborhood should be completed by the end of the second quarter 2016.

This week the ABFF received an invitation from the organizers of the European Championship 2016 to visit the final match, which will be held in Paris July 10. Such invitations are traditionally obtained by all the heads of national football federations, and hardly anyone will refuse from such an opportunity. Sergei Safaryan stressed that during these events representatives of the football family can discuss cooperation plans, exchange experiences of holding tournaments of different levels, which is always good.

When it comes to the recent Finals of the U17 European Championship, which Belarus hosted, all the guests and UEFA representatives noted the good organization of the competition and a lot of interest from fans. However, the Belarusian team's performance was upsetting: the hosts, who were preparing for this tournament for 4 years, suffered three defeats in the group and did not make it to the playoffs. Nevertheless, every experience of hosting international tournaments gives a positive result and Belarus hopes it will in the future host competitions at higher levels.

Commenting on Belarus national team's May friendlies, Sergei Safaryan noted that he has mixed feelings about them. After a big defeat against Northern Ireland (0:3) there was disappointment, but after winning against Ireland (2:1) the mood improved markedly and there is reason to be optimistic about the future. In September 2016, Belarus will begin World Cup 2018 qualifiers.
