Belarus tightens responsibility for use and possession of drugs

Belarus is tightening responsibility for the use and possession of drugs. Amendments to the relevant bill were approved on May 12 by the House of Representatives. The document provides for stricter liability for owners of online stores and entertainment venues if they do not notify law enforcement authorities about the illegal traffic of banned substances.

There are clarifications on the grounds that allow placing juveniles in special medical and educational institutions. In addition, separate liability for drug use is introduced.

Vasily Alekseyenko, deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus:
If a person is found intoxicated in a public place without a specialist's prescription, this person faces administrative responsibility: a fine of 5 to 10 basic units. If such a person is at work during working hours, the fine is from 8 to 12 basic units. Consumption of drugs in a public place entails responsibility from 10 to 15 basic units.
