Belarus advances into Fed Cup World Group

Belarus have won against Russia 3-2 in the Fed Cup World Group Playoffs and advanced to the World Group, which is the highest women's international tennis division, where such tennis nations as Germany, USA and the Czech Republic play.

The hero of the night was Alexandra Sasnovich, who won the fourth match of the tie against Margarita Gasparyan, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 in Moscow's Luzhniki to make it 3-1 overall. Tension was so high that both athletes had to replace the broken rackets at the end of the final set. The match lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes. After the Russia tie was won Alexandra thanked all the fans and her coach and praised Gasparyan's for resilience.

Sasnovich, who proved to be a true hero of Belarus' match against Canada in the previous Fed Cup stage, lost the opening battle of the Russia tie against young star Darya Kasatkina 3-6, 6-3, 1-6.

Then it was world No.5 Victoria Azarenka's turn to make a contribution and she did it perfectly. The Belarusian, who resides in Monaco, beat Gasparyan with confidence (6-2, 6-3) and then dealt with Kasatkina, not without difficulties (6-2, 5-7, 6-3).

This is the first time Belarus has reached the Fed Cup World Group.

In the doubles match, which already did not have any tournament importance, Russians Kasatkina/Vesnina ousted Belarus' reserves Govortsova/Sabalenka 6-4, 6-2 to make the score in the tie 3-2. The Belarus President congratulated the team on the successful performance.

The last time Belarus lost in the Fed Cup was against the Netherlands in 2014.
