Servicemen banned from using smartphones for information security considerations

Selfies pose a threat of leakage of confidential data. The Ministry of Defence has banned soldiers from using smartphones and tablets from information security considerations. Now, under the new rules, the military can only make calls using old models of mobile phones and use devices that don't provide internet access.

All these measures are primarily aimed at maintaining the confidentiality of military information. But soldiers are allowed to use phones outside military units.

Andrei Ravkov, Defense Minister of the Republic of Belarus:
This is done for the sake of information security. During working time, at workplaces where unauthorized access to information is possible, it is forbidden to use gadgets that allow transferring information.

A similar problem is pressing worldwide. The Russian army also restricts. It is also planned to toughen the measures in the Chinese army. According to a survey, about 70% of Chinese servicemen take photos against the background of military facilities. Often, coordinates of objects are attached to the images.

British troops will also limit the use of gadgets. There were cases when online community learnt about the death of a soldier earlier than the relatives of the deceased.
