Belarusian schools across the country will balance the number of hours dedicated to the studying of two state languages - Belarusian and Russian. It will be regardless of what language a school is using in day-to-day communication with students.
Students will have three lessons of the Russian and Belarusian languages and two hours of literature. As first, the innovation will affect only second-graders, but a year later it will be introduced in third and then fourth grade.
Such a system has long been in force, but it started only in fifth grade. In recent years, students have shown increased interest in studying the history and geography of Belarus is their native language.
Irina Bulavkina, chief specialist of the General Secondary Education Department, Education Ministry of Belarus:
Students have the right to learn the language and literature more thoroughly, more deeply, and three hours are allocated to study each subject.
