Chinese New Year in Belarus: Dumplings on the table, red clothes, jewelery and envelopes

The Chinese New Year was celebrated not only in Minsk but all over the world. It is also called Spring Festival. This is one of the oldest and most important dates of the eastern calendar. Each year is associated with an animal. 2016 is associated with a fiery monkey. The main thing is that it promises are marital and material welfare.

Chinese chef Li Ming is making culinary delights.  But, in spite of the traditional features, there is one common feature of the Belarusian and Chinese New Year - a holiday table should abound with treats.

Fish in Chinese table is a vital thing. Marinated fish head is a brand dish for Li Ming. Moreover, the Chinese know how to cook even fish bones.

Li Ming, chef of a Chinese restaurant:
It is necessarily have fish on the table. This is related to the Chinese language. The character designating it is translated as "happiness", "wealth". And you need to prepare meat: pork or beef. If you eat meat in the New Year, you will be eating it throughout the year.

A constant symbol of the Chinese New Year is dumplings. It is believed the more you eat, the richer will be the coming year. Li Ming's record is 700 cooked dumplings on a New Year's Eve.

Li Ming, chef of a Chinese restaurant:
The two main ingredients are meat and pastry. It must be very thinly rolled out. It is good to use Belarusian flour. Dumplings is a must during the New Year for any family in China.

Minsk residents were invited to taste Chinese New Year dishes on February 7.We are now making Jiaozuo, a kind of Chinese dumplings. They are often made by the whole family on the eve of New Year's evening. It is believed that Jiaozuo symbolizes unity and brings happiness. The process seems to be simple, but there are some unique tricks.

By the way, the Chinese New Year is a real red letter day. Chinese meet this holiday in red dress. He is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. And ornaments of red are also in the home of many Chinese.

The evil spirit Nian is also afraid of fire and loud noise. Once he was frightened off by bamboo clappers. Now by firecrackers and fireworks.

Chinese living in Belarus do not organize fireworks displays but they do decorate their homes according to ancient canons.

Cui Changjiang, director of a hotel:
As a rule, these characters in these inscriptions are repeated. For example, it says here: welcome, joy, happiness!

Cui Changjiang meets the CTV camera crew with red envelopes. By tradition, they are given for good luck.

Cui Changjiang, director of a hotel:
We want to introduce the people of Belarus to our traditions. I am confident that our friendship will only multiply in the new year.

In China, the New Year (or "The arrival of spring") is the most important and the oldest festival. It is celebrated during one month all over China, in big cities and in villages, and also abroad.

The fact that the New Year in China is a real home party confirms the unique phenomenon - the largest mass migration in the world. Hundreds of millions of people rush home to celebrate holiday with their families, creating enormous traffic jams. This week at a station in Guangzhou, more than 100,000 got stuck.

Cui Changjiang, director of a hotel:
Usually all family members gather together and share a dinner together sitting at the table, eating, drinking tea and watching New Year's programs. Chinese New Year is important for us because it carries a sense of family togetherness.

More and more citizens of Minsk are seeking to not only learn Chinese, but also get acquainted with Chinese traditions. Many master classes are organized in Minsk so that Belarusians can understand the mysteries of Chinese tea, Chinese skills and Chinese opera mask making.

Students:
They showed us how to brew traditional Chinese tea. And I want to brew it as well, and drink it in honor of the New Year.

For us, the Chinese New Year is also a certain tradition because we are interested in China and Chinese people.
