Canada 1:1 Belarus after Fed Cup 2016 tie's day 1

After the first Fed Cup World Group II competition day Belarus are holding 1:1 against Canada. The matches are being held at Pavillon de l'éducation physique et des sports de l'Université Laval in Quebec City.

In the debut singles match, Belarusian Alexandra Sasnovich (99th in the world ranking) won against Canadian Françoise Abanda (343), 6:4, 2:6, 6:3.

In the absence of Victoria Azarenka, the current leader of the Belarusian team Olga Govortsova (74) was later defeated by Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak in the second match. Wozniak occupies 803rd place in the WTA ranking. The Canadian tennis player looked very confident, showing great will to win, and cruised to victory in only two sets, 6:2, 6:2.

After the first day of the tournament Belarus captain Eduard Dubrov said that his team were convinced that there will be no easy games in such matches and one should fight for every ball. The rivals, he noted, are very motivated because they are playing at home, with the enthusiastic support of fans.

However, the coach believes the team and is not going to make substitutions in the second game day.

Today, on February 7, Olga Govortsova is to take on Françoise Abanda, while Alexandra Sasnovich will compete with Aleksandra Wozniak.

Then, if needed, the tennis players will meet in the doubles match, in which Olga Govortsova and Vera Lapko will face Carol Zhao and Gabriela Dabrowski.

Victoria Azarenka, 14th in the world rankings, was replaced by 17-year-old Nika Shitkovskaya.

Now the women's team of Belarus are 15th in the world team ranking, while Canada are 12th.
