Belarus to face Canada in Fed Cup

Today in Quebec, there was held a draw for the first-round match of World Group II of the Fed Cup between Belarus and Canada. This will be their first meeting at such a level.

The captain of the Belarusian team Eduard Dubrov first included in the team the leader Victoria Azarenka (14th in the WTA ranking) but then replaced her with 17-year-old Nika Shitkovskaya. Also in the squad are Olga Govortsova (74), Alexandra Sasnovich (99) and Vera Lapko (538).

Last week, the team leader of the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in Melbourne performed well at the Australian Open, reaching the quarter-finals, while 17-year-old Vera Lapko won the Junior Australian Open.

Canadians will not feature their main star either as Eugenie Bouchard (58) will not take part in the Fed Cup tie. However, the Canadian tennis player and team captain Sylvain Bruneau said his team would try to fight against a very strong Belarusian national team.

On Saturday, February 6, Belarus’ Alexandra Sasnovich will take on Canadian Françoise Abanda (343). After them, Olga Govortsova plays Aleksandra Wozniak (803).

On the second competition day of February 7, Govortsova faces Abanda, then Sasnovich will compete against Wozniak. Finally, in the doubles match, Belarus’ Govortsova and Lapko will take on Carol Zhao and Gabriela Dabrowski.

At the moment, the women's team of Belarus are 15th in the world ranking while Canada are 12th.
