Footballers of Team Belarus U18 took second place at the Development Cup 2016, which ended at Minsk's Futbolnyi Manezh Arena.
In the decisive match for the grand prize coach Roman Kirenkin's charges lost to Ukraine 1:3. The only goal for Belarus came after the shot of Pavel Sadovsky, on 20 minutes, when Ukrainians were already 2:0 up. This is the third success of the Ukrainian U18 team at the Development Cup, which is usually held in Minsk. Before that, they won the trophy in 2009 and 2012.
The Belarusian team overcame the first stage of the competition without defeats in preliminary group A, beating Iran 3:1, Latvia 2:0 and Slovakia 1:0. In the play-off round of the decisive match Belarus were twice behind in the match against Israel but eventually pulled out a victory 3:2. Ukrainians in the group stage won against Moldova (5:1) and Georgia (3:1), played a draw with Finland 0:0, and in the play-offs defeated Israel 3:0.
This was the 12th youth tournament under the arches of the Minsk football arena. The tournament was four times won by the Russian team (2008, 2010, 2014, 2015), three times by Ukraine (2009, 2012, 2016), twice by Belarus (2006 and 2007) and Belgium (2011 and 2013). Serbia and Montenegro won the Cup once in 2005.
