FC BATE Borisov draw Bayer Leverkusen 1-1, chances for playoff slim

Belarus' FC BATE Borisov were held by Bayer Leverkusen of Germany in the 5th-tour game of the Champions League at Borisov Arena on November 25.

The Belarusians had a decent first half, with Mihkail Gordeychuk scoring inside the first 90 seconds of the match. Bayer goalie Leno made a horrendous mistake letting the seemingly easy shot between the legs.

Bayer pressed in the second half and their efforts paid off in the 68th minute when Admir Mehmedi deceived BATE goalie Chernik with a neat chip that was not intended as a shot but landed in the right corner of the net. That was the last goal of the game, which was in general equal, with both sides having some chances to score more. 1-1 was the final score after 90 minutes that cold night at Borisov Arena.

Alexander Hleb, former Arsenal and Barcelona player now contracted to FC BATE, said after the match that a draw is a neutral result but it would be better to win in order to be in control of the club's playoff fate.

In the other game of Group E Barcelona hammered Roma 6-1. Now BATE will take on the Italian club away and need only a victory to enter the playoff. Moreover, the Belarusians need Barcelona to take at least a point in the game against Bayer in Germany.
