Alexander Lukashenko about Russian airbase: Aircraft will not cool NATO heads. Unlike missiles

Belarus is bound by strategic partnership agreements in the military sphere. Within the framework of the CSTO, and, of course, the Union State. But Belarus has a special role: the geographical position requires the country to always keep powder dry. Alexander Lukashenko expressed his point of view about the Russia airbase.

Alexander Lukashenko:
You know, we do not need any bases. Understand one simple thing: I'm not cozying up to anyone. Firstly, we are building with Russia not only the Union State, but we are now in the Collective Security Treaty Organization - a military-political alliance. As you in NATO. Within the CSTO we have divided areas of responsibility. We are in the west, in direct contact with the structures of NATO. Accordingly, we don't want to fight anyone we always say that we have to keep powder dry. Based on this we are building a kind of an adequate policy, military and political. In connection with this we have signed with Russia an agreement in the framework of the the Union State and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and then lots of documents to develop contracts and ensure our economic, political and military-political stability. I am just reminding you, that's no secret.
We along with the Russian Federation have established here an adequate military force. Its basis is the Belarusian army. 70,000 bayonets today. It is constantly being improved and modernized. We look at the conflict in Ukraine, Syria, earlier in Iraq, elsewhere and see what methods are used during these wars and conflicts. And we are making appropriate conclusions adapting our armed forces to these conflicts. So, remember one thing: we have an agreement with Russia to build a force in the western direction (our area of
responsibility, first of all). Of course, I cannot tell you in detail where they are located and so on but that's not a big secret either. The point is that if, God forbid, there is a conflict in the west, the Belarusian army deals with the conflict, especially using its armed forces. During a few days Russia helps us with its Armed Forces. We don't want to war. I don't want to fight but if we have to, we will be fighting until the end together with Russia, Russian people and all those who want to support us here and maybe even die in Belarus. Tell me, in order to provide these conditions today, do we need a base, especially an airbase? If they are based in Pskov, Smolensk, would it mean a big difference? No. We do not need this today. What we need is air defense (if we still need it since I know that we have resolved the most acute problem) - that's the main thing for Belarus. We had two areas poorly covered - the Brest one and the one near Minsk. I asked the Russian side and our military that we need to cover this direction. Russia was not in crises back then but they did not find money. I then asked: you have C-300, you don't need them anymore because you have C-400. So okay: give them to us. But they refused. We bought those complexes. And our guys upgraded them 100% and we resolved the problem. But if Russia had helped us with missile weapons, we would not have had to spend a fortune creating such missile systems as Polonaise - this is also no longer a secret. Their range is 200 km. It is not against Latvia, do not worry. These missiles can fly over Latvia and can hit targets in the Baltic Sea. In no case against Latvia. We were forced to do it. We did it without Russia. Although I also asked the Russian Federation for help.
Today, we are working on other systems that make impossible war against Belarus. Planes, even a regiment will not cool NATO heads. Unlike missiles. Therefore, powerful air defense and missile systems will be used for the defense of Belarus and Russia, because it is our area of
responsibility. If a country starts war against Russia and if that country asks us not to interfere because Belarus will not be involved, this is wrong, since Belarus will fight on the Russian side. We have an agreement with Russia. We must defend Russian land here in Belarus, not in Syria or Ukraine or elsewhere. After a few days we will be reinforced by aircraft and cruise missiles and other things from Russia. Today, if Russia agrees to give us an aircraft regiment (24) tomorrow there will be the best pilots of the Belarusian Armed Forces.
