Deputy Minister of Sport and Tourism Alexander Gagiev answered the questions of the program "Sports Week" on the CTV.

Alexander, good evening.

Alexander Gagiev:
Good evening.

Did you watch BATE v Roma? Surprised?

Alexander Gagiev:
Of course, this was probably one of the main events of last week. We always expect such surprises from BATE. And, perhaps, they did what they were capable of.

What events do you think were the most significant in 2015?

Alexander Gagiev:
The year was very eventful. I would like to note our national team's participation in the I European Games in Baku, 43 medals. I think that was a very decent performance. And we see this as a phase of preparation for the Olympic Games in Brazil. The Youth/Junior World Championship was held in Raubichi at a very high level. Also, the European Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics. It was organized at the highest level too.

At the last Weightlifing World Championships we did great and now we have a complete set of licenses. I think the result is great. But what is with Andrei Aramnau. As he is now doing?

Alexander Gagiev:
Andrei is not actually preparing for the Olympics. I think that he will not take part in the world championship. We have created all the necessary conditions. He tried to recover. But, unfortunately, injuries did not allow him to fully prepare. I think that Andrei will not go to the Olympics either.

Does Belarus plan to hold some really big world sporting events?

Alexander Gagiev:
Sure. The 2019 European Festival, for which preparations have already begun and are underway. Next year Belarus hosts the European Championships in speed skating, at the beginning of January. The Youth World Championship in rowing and canoeing. A huge event, which gathers more than 70 countries, more than 1,300-1,500 members. It will take place in Zaslavl.

What do foreigners say about sport in Belarus?

Alexander Gagiev:
Of course, our country is recognizable in the world of sports. Of course, through the merits of our athletes and Belarus sports policy. The President of the European National Olympic Committee said about Belarus: "You are ready, we know what you have. You held the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, you have a wonderful base." I think another decision will be made. Today, without Darya Domracheva, Victoria Azarenka and Vasily Kiriyenko Belarus would not be that famous.

What impressions do you have after visiting pre-Olympic Rio?

Alexander Gagiev:
I want to say that the facilities are being built today at a faster pace, work is underway almost 24/7. Sports facilities today are 90% ready. In addition to sports facilities, we are talking about significant roads, other infrastructure. Rio is a big construction site today.

Will there be problems with acclimatization of Belarusian athletes?

Alexander Gagiev:
In Brazil, there will be winter in that period and the climate will be very similar to Belarusian weather in summer. 20-28 degrees, maybe a little warmer, a little colder. Therefore, there should be no problem. The complexity of flights makes us rack our brains!

Many sports are developing in Belarus. Maybe we should think and focus only on medal bringing sports?

Alexander Gagiev:
Yes, Belarus is developing about 160 kinds of sports. But if we talk about their development on the basis of state financing, today we have 46 sports in which we have national teams. These are of course mostly Olympic sports. Plus traditional sports. Sambo, kickboxing, water skiing.

There is the President's Sports Club, which is of a great help to our sport. Does sport need its help?

Alexander Gagiev:
Its help is very important. Today we are carrying out a number of joint projects with the Ministry. Today the President's Sports Club provides a great help to our younger generation. Kids receive scholarships. This is enough for some to achieve first results at the international level and then become professionals.
