Belarus tops CIS vehicles per capita rating. What cars do Belarusians prefer?

Last week, Belarus traditionally celebrated the World Day Without a Car. It is noticeable that the number of cars in Belarus is growing.

Sergei Varivoda, deputy chairman of the Belarusian Automobile Association:
Three cars in the courtyard. I remember the number - load on country roads. The traffic was intense if more than 9 cars were seen per 1 kilometer.

A typical picture of the city: the sleeping area, a high-rise building and a parking near the house. 5-10 years ago, during the day these areas were all free. Today at lunchtime you struggle to find a place, but in the evening you just cannot park. The level of car ownership is growing in Belarus, and in terms of the number of vehicles per 1,000 population Minsk is among the leaders of CIS cities.

According to an authoritative Russian analytical agency, Belarus in the CIS has the highest number of vehicles per 1,000 people: 355. In Russia, the figure is 317, in Kazakhstan 270, and Ukraine at least 200.

The level of car ownership is an important economic indicator which demonstrates the quality of life.

According to official statistics, the number of cars in Belarus has grown more than twice in the last 15 years.

Sergei Mikhnevich, chairman of the Belarusian Automobile Association:
The level of car ownership is the level of consumption and income of the population. Therefore, we can only rejoice in the fact that Belarus has such a high level.

In addition to the number of vehicles it is difficult not to notice the qualitative change. Today, the most popular car among Belarusians is a sedan with a gasoline engine of 1,600 cubic centimeters, manual transmission, often no more than 3-5 years old.

Sergei Varivoda, deputy chairman of Belarusian Automobile Association:
Income growth in recent years has provided sufficiently serious sales of passenger cars. I want to remind you that in 2011 we sold over 200 thousand cars in Belarus, including new and used. Each year, this figure does not fall below 100-120 thousand over the last 5-7 years. This is a fairly large number.

Five years ago, sales of new cars in Belarus did not exceed 15 thousand cars a year. However, in 2014 this figure tripled to 45 thousand.

Experts say that the growth potential of the car fleet in Belarus is still quite large.
