EU, Brazil and the Vatican diplomats visit refugee families in Gomel region

Immigrants from Syria found a new life in Belarus. Families forced to flee from the deadly threat in their home country are happy with peaceful heaven in Belarus. Sept. 3 diplomats from the EU, Brazil and the Vatican could see it in person. Representatives of diplomatic missions visited Syrian citizens in their new homes in Gomel in the framework of a United Nations project.

Jean-Yves Bouchardy, representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Republic of Belarus:
In general, the adaptation is going well. Keep in mind that these people arrived in a completely foreign environment only six months ago. The heads of the two families found a job. One in the restaurant, and the second one is undergoing internship to work as a pharmacist. Today we have invited representatives of embassies, so they get acquainted with our project and can help these people in the future.

In February 2015, 14 people from Syria arrived in Gomel, 8 of whom are children. Just two weeks ago, the Syrian diaspora in Gomel was increased thanks to a baby girl named Aya.

Meanwhile, the UN praised the work of Belarus with Ukrainian immigrants. Letter of thanks of the Representative Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees were delivered to Gomel. Inside 1.5 years alone, more than 27 thousand citizens of Ukraine officially arrived in this region. Nearly one in four of them came from the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. Housing and jobs were found for all people who asked for help.
