Belarusians succeed in 1st round of US Open qualification

Belarusian tennis players have advanced to the second qualifying round of the US Open.

In the men's singles Belarusian Vladimir Ignatik (202) beat in two sets Chinese tennis player Jason Jung (223), 6:1, 7:5. Ignatik's next opponent will be Russian Evgeny Donskoy (138).

Today another Belarusian tennis player Dmitry Zhirmont (278) will take on Spaniard Adrian Menendez-Maceiras (132) in the qualifying. In the women's competition Belarusian Alexandra Sasnovich (118) confidently won the first match against Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu (270), 6:4, 6:2. In the second round Sasnovich meets Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa Gibert (215).

To get into the main stage of the US Open, tennis players have to overcome three rounds of qualifying. Two Belarusian tennis players Victoria Azarenka (20) and Olga Govortsova (69) qualify for the main draw automatically.

The US Open draw will take place on August 27, while the opening match is scheduled for August 31. The US Open finishes on September 13.

Belarus' Max Mirnyi has improved his ranking. Now the Belarusian tennis player the best rating in the last 14 months. In the new ATP doubles ranking, published on August 24, Max Mirnyi rose from 36th to 31st place.

This happened against the background of Max Mirnyi and Spaniard Feliciano Lopez failing to reach the final of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati (USA).

It is also notable that Victoria Azarenka is now in the top 20 again after a 2-week hiatus. She was earlier 21st and has moved up one notch.
