Belarus women 2nd at 2015 FIBA 3x3 U18 European Championships in Minsk

Belarus women 2nd at 2015 FIBA 3x3 U18 European Championships in Minsk

The 2015 FIBA 3x3 U18 European Championships have finished in the Belarusian capital Minsk on August 23. The competitions lasted three days.

16 teams in the men's and women's events competed for victory. For Belarusians, 3x3 basketball is quite a new sport.

Even the current European champions Spain, who less than two weeks ago won in the Junior European Championship in classic basketball, did not miss the opportunity to test their strength in the 3x3 format.

Naira Caceres, Spain's national 3x3 basketball team:
This is the first time I have taken part in a 3x3 competition. This is a different thing as compared to classic basketball. Here you have to be a little faster and a little smarter. And this start is a great opportunity to gain new experience. In addition, the skills that we are improving here will be useful later in classic basketball.

Belarus’ women in the end reached the final and met there with Hungary, whom they defeated on the opening day. Each game lasts ten minutes, and thus the entire game is dynamic and bright. And moreover nothing is predictable in this game. This is proven by the victory of Belarus' (lowest-ranked team) over the ranking leader Hungary 15-7.

Belarus also outplayed Estonia 21-4 and Romania 16-10. In the playoff Belarus deal with Belgium 17-10 and Israel 19-12.

In the final Belarus met with Hungary again and eventually narrowly lost 15-16. Israeli women became third.

In the men’s competition, Belarus were stopped in the semis by France (9-20) after victories against Georgia and Israel in the group stage and the 21-15 win over Belgium in the quarterfinal.

Turkey, to whom Belarus lost at the group stage, eventually won the tournament, with France coming in second and Spain third, depriving Belarus of the podium place in the 3rd place tie.
