FC BATE snatch narrow win versus Partizan in Champions League playoff

FC BATE Borisov defeated on August 18 Serbian Partizan at Borisov Arena in the first leg of the decisive round of the Champions League qualification. Mikhail Gordeichuk scored the only goal 75 minutes into the game with a neat header from Igor Stasevich's corner.

Partizan were reduced to ten men after Marko Jevtović received his second yellow card in the 45th minute of the first half and were unable to pose significant threat to BATE in the second half.

However, BATE owned a noticeable advantage for most of the game, but the Belarusians were did not put chances into goals thanks to efforts of Partizan keeper Zivko Zivkovic or inaccuracy in the final third.

The Borisov club made a couple of mistakes which could lead to goals but the goalkeeper Sergey Chernik promptly ran out to intercept the balls and thus prevented the guests' clear cut chances and away goals, which could prove to be key in this two-leg tie.

Igor Stasevich, who had not played since July 22 because of injury, appeared on the pitch in the second half and this proved to be a key change made by BATE manager Alexander Yermakovich. Igor made BATE's play much more dangerous and the team began to act more actively on free kicks and corners, on of which led to a goal.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona star Alexander Hleb returned to BATE a couple of weeks ago after a season in Turkey and also took part in the Champions League game. The attacking midfielder organized dangerous offensive action and was substituted for Dmitry Baha in the second half.

BATE play Partizan in an away leg in Serbia in a week. The Borisov club needs any win or draw. They can also lose with a difference of one goal but in this case they need to score at least once.

In the case of success, FC BATE may progress to the Champions League group stage for the fifth time in its history.
