Ruslan Salei memorial ice hockey touriament kicks off in Minsk

Today in Minsk, there will start the annual Ice Hockey Cup of Belarus, which was renamed in 2013 Ruslan Salei Cup.

On September 7, 2011 the legendary ice hockey player Ruslan Salei of Belarus, was killed along with the team "Lokomotiv" in a plane crash. The plane was taking off from the Yaroslavl airport. Due to numerous requests of fans, now this annual event is a tribute to the ice hockey player.

12 teams are taking part in the tournament. The organizers every year try to add some new features. This cup was earlier considered a rehearsal prior to more important games, while now it has acquired much more significance.

The 12 sides have been divided into two groups of 6 teams. Two top teams from each group will enter the final round, which will be played according to the Champions League format, one game at home and one away. The tournament finished in December, thus spanning almost five months.

The jersey of Ruslan Salei will be traditionally raised as a tribute to the great Belarusian hockey player.
