Sociologist Christian Haerpfer: Belarusians are more satisfied with quality of life than people in other countries

Belarusian' satisfaction with quality of life is higher than in other countries. This was stated by the well-known European sociologist Christian Haerpfer on 4 August. He is on a visit in Belarus these days.

Christian Haerpfer is a well-known sociologist, Professor of Political Science at the Faculty of Politics and International Relations, University of Aberdeen in Scotland. In 2009, he was appointed director of the research project "Eurasian barometer". In 2013, he was appointed head of the Association World Values Survey. One of the most ambitious of his works was started in the late 1980s. Since then, Christian Haerpfer has been exporing political and social transformations in Central and Eastern Europe. Among his well-known research projects are "Health in Transition", "New Democracy Index" and others.

For more than 20 years, Christian Haerpfer has been studying the political, economic and social life in post-Soviet countries. During this time, a lot of studies have been carried out. Therefore, as the sociologist notes, he has something to compare with. For example, over the years, the so-called planning horizon has increased . In other words, the time frame for which a person can build plans for the future has expanded.

Christian Haerpfer, political science professor at the Faculty of Politics and International Relations, University of Aberdeen (UK):
If you remember Belarus 20 years ago, then everyone was talking about the uncertainty of the future. When we recorded the interview in the nineties, people told us: we do not know what will happen to me and my family. The population was very nostalgic about the Soviet Union, where they knew everything: the economic system, the pension system and where there was stability. Now, 20 years later, we can talk about the increased sense of stability and confidence in the future, the future of their families and children and a sense of security.
