Belarus President demands clear formation of retail prices for fruit, vegetables

The Belarus President demands to sort out problems with the formation of retail prices of fruit and vegetables. Alexander Lukashenko voiced this task on July 31 during a visit to a Minsk Vegetable Factory.

The factory now owns more than 5,000 hectares of farmland and 4000ha of arable lands. The President looked how the harvesting campaign is going on at the example of this very factory. He also assessed the state of machinery. In the fields around the country more than 10,000 combine harvesters are now working. The head of state came to one of them today, July 31.

The main activity of Minsk Vegetable Factory is growing vegetables of protected and open ground.

The President noted that the once made decision to keep the greenhouses was right. Over the past 10 years alone, exports of these products increased by 10 times.

Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus President:
In those days I was convinced that we cannot compete on the market either within Belarus or in Russia in connection with the fact that gas prices differ. They told me to remove all the greenhouses and buy vegetable products outside. Then I said: 'No, you will restore all the old greenhouses (you can remove the old ones and build new in their place). Then a problem appeared (it was the second stage): we needed to add 40 hectares of greenhouses.
Some 'clever' officials urged me to buy harvesters from Germany, to buy plows abroad, and produce no more MTZ-80 and MTZ-82. They told me we had better buy sugar cane instead of sugar beet, that we did not need beet. Similarly, they proposed me not to build new greenhouse since we would not be able to compete. But our imports would surge! We would need to sell everything and be left with nothing. Where would we take currency? And why do we need our lands? We need it to cultivate these crops.

Alexander Lukashenko also visited greenhouses of Minsk Vegetable Factory. The company was founded over 50 years ago. And now about 15 kinds of products grow in these new energy-saving greenhouses.

The President instructed officials to deal with the formation of retail prices of fruit and vegetables and fully solve the issue of provision of people with greenhouse vegetables in the next 5 years.

Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus President:
Shall we work or not but in the future five years the issue of greenhouses should be removed from the agenda. We need to build as many modern greenhouses as we need. Five years is enough, more than enough. As far as competition is concerned... If Spaniards want to sell their goods here, let them come and compete.
