Minsk bids for hosting 2019 and 2020 European Athletics Championships

Minsk bids for hosting 2019 and 2020 European Athletics Championships

Minsk has submitted bids for the hosting of the 2019 and 2020 European Athletics Championships. While it is easier with the indoor championship (since Minsk Arena can easily host it) nothing is guaranteed in the case of the summer tournament.

The main difficulty is that Dinamo Stadium has been undergoing renovations for several years now. But it is the very arena that is to host the athletics competitions for which Minsk has submitted a bid.

Dinamo stadium is brimming with history: it hosted the games of the 1980 Olympics and Champions League matches featuring the best Belarusian football club BATE Borisov.

The arena is now undergoing renovations and is set to be commissioned by 2018. Alexander Yeliseyev, the chief architect, says that builders face two main problems: they have to be extremely careful since the statium is actually a monument of architecture. Another issue is the vertical drop of 12m between what was earlier the main field and a garden outside.

The Belarusian arena will compete for the hosting of the 2020 Summer European Athletics Championships with such famous arenas as the London Olympic stadium.

Chairman of the Belarusian Athletics Federation Vadim Devyatovsky says that the bid is just the voicing of Belarus’ intentions. The Belarus President earlier demanded that steps be made to attract tourists and sports fans to Belarus for important international events.

Belarus now voices its intentions and hopes that the organizers will be interested in the country’s project. The 2014 IIHF WM and other events showed that Belarus can host a lot of fans and tourists without any problems,” Mr Devyatovsky added.
