CIS appoints observation mission chief for Belarus presidential elections

The CIS observation mission for the presidential elections in Belarus has decided on who will lead it. Executive Secretary of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Sergei Lebedev was appointed chief of the mission.

This was announced at a meeting of plenipotentiary representatives of the CIS member states, which was held in Minsk today.

The new head of the mission is preparing to hold several important meetings to discuss the future work of the election observation. It is necessary to determine the composition of the working group and how its activities will be organized.

Sergey Lebedev, Executive Secretary of the Commonwealth of Independent States:
We gratefully received the invitation from the leadership of the Republic of Belarus to take part in the monitoring of the upcoming October 11 presidential election. The experience we have accumulated in the Republic of Belarus will help us to clearly organize the work. The approach is the same: objective, impartial, strict compliance with the legislation of the country where observation is taking place. We try to carry out our work clearly and in an organized way. We do not interfere in the internal affairs of the country where the monitoring is being conducted.
