Patriarch of All Russia Kirill visits Brest Fortress, ends trip to Belarus

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church served a memorial prayer service for the fallen Red Army soldiers of the St. Nicholas church garrison. At exactly 4am, a meeting-requiem started.

Exactly 74 years ago, at the dawn of June 22, the German Nazi troops crossed the border of the Soviet Union, breaking the non-aggression pact. This event forever changed history.

From the first hours Belarus became the scene of major military operations.

In that war, which lasted 1,418 days, our country lost every third citizen. It was the garrison of the Brest Fortress that had to repel the first attacks of the powerful Nazi army.

At the end of the memorable events the Russian Orthodox Church head flew to Moscow. Thus a three-day visit of Patriarch Kirill to Belarus ended.
