OSCE appreciates Belarus' role in settlement of Ukrainian conflict

The OSCE appreciates the role of Belarus in the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Lamberto Zannier said this meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei in Minsk.

The two sides held talks on cooperation of our country and the organization. The sides exchanged views on issues of European security. The settlement of the situation in Ukraine and Belarus' contribution to this process were among the topic issues.

Lamberto Zannier, Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe:
We discussed several issues. One of them is the crisis in Ukraine and the direct role of Minsk. The very position of Belarus on Ukraine is essential. We discussed how we can strengthen our cooperation and how we can help resolve this conflict, which has become very dramatic. In addition, we hope that Belarus will be more involved in the projects and activities of the organization.

Vladimir Makei, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus:
With all the shortcomings, the OSCE was the only organization that could somehow affect the negative development of the situation in Ukraine, played a role in neutralizing the situation. I would like to stress that the OSCE is in any event the only organization that plays an important role in restoring peace and stability in Ukraine.

Together with the Secretary General, Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Michael Georg Link arrived in Minsk on a working visit.

Michael Georg Link, Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe:
We always send a mission that evaluates the election process. And after this assessment we form the general principle of a number of observers to be sent. We think that this mission should be big, but we need to wait for results. And we'll see. The international community is greatly interested in the elections.

After the meeting at the Foreign Ministry, the OSCE officials went to the Belarusian parliament, where they met with the Deputy Chairman of the lower chamber Viktor Guminsky.

It is worth noting that he is also the current head of the permanent delegation of the National Assembly of Belarus in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The sides discussed further cooperation of Belarus with the organization. In turn, Viktor Guminsky noted that the visit of the OSCE Secretary General will be a new impetus to cooperation with Belarus.
