Brave Belarus outgunned by Spain 0-1 in Euro 2016 qualifier

Belarus were defeated 0-1 in the home Euro 2016 qualifying match by the reigning champions of the continent Spain.

The coaching staff of the Belarusian team was unable to field the strongest team in the game against Spain. For various reasons, Timofey Kalachev, Maxim Zhavnerchik, Sergei Balanovich and other players of the main squad were unable to help the team.

In the first half, the Spaniards completely owned the initiative, but Alexander Khatskevich's men ably defended, with defenders assisted by the brilliant play of goalkeeper Andrei Gorbunov.

However, in the last minute of the first half and he was powerless, having made a mistake after rushing forward enabling David Silva to shoot into the empty net.

After the break, the Belarusians began to play a much more active football, which the guests obviously did not expect. The home side created several attacks but the experienced goalkeeper Iker Casillas repelled all shots.

All in all, Belarusians played 5 matches in qualifying Group C: defeated the Macedonians 2:1 (away), drew with Luxembourg 1:1 (away) and lost to Ukraine 0:2 (home), Slovakia 1:3 (home), and Spain 0:3 (away).

In addition to the game in Borisov two more games were played in Group C. Slovakia in Zilina beat FYR Macedonia 2:1, while Ukraine in Lviv defeated underdogs Luxembourg 3:0. After 6 rounds, the standings is as follows: Slovakia 18 points (goal difference - 13-3), Spain 15 (15-3), Ukraine 12 (9-2), Belarus 4 (4-11), Macedonia 3 (6-14) and Luxembourg 1 (3-17).
