Darya Domracheva: The Way to the Big Crystal Globe in 2014/2015 season

Darya Domracheva: The Way to the Big Crystal Globe in 2014/2015 season

Let's start the program "Week" with the news that came a few hours ago from Russian Khanty-Mansiysk.

The best Belarusian biathlete Darya Domracheva for the first time won the Big Crystal Globe, finishing in first in the World Cup overall standings.

This is the first such trophy in the sovereign history of Belarus.

Domracheva is three-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion. The leader of the Belarusian biathlon team has numerous awards. The only thing lacking in Darya's career was the World Cup and she repeatedly told about it, too. And here it is - the Big Crystal Globe.

Some 12.5 km, four firing ranges and the main thing - the fate of the Big Crystal Globe was at stake. Before the final race, the whole world stood waiting for an answer to the question: who is the best biathlete of the planet?

Domracheva competed for the title against her arch rival from Finland Kaisa Mäkäräinen.

Throughout the season, the athletes were near each other in the World Cup standings.  In the last race, Dasha came to the finish line in fourth but it did not matter. What really mattered is that Kaisa was left far behind and eventually came 13th.

Already in the 2008/2009 season, Darya regularly begun to finish in the top ten. And then it became clear that we are witnessing the growth of the world biathlon queen. The first victories came thank to general formula for success: accurate shooting and great speed on the track.

There have been curious and even funny cases in Darya's career but she treats them with humor. For example, the Belarusian biathlete began to shoot from the standing position at one of the shooting ranges, which was actually for prone shooting.

The 2011/2012 season gave us the Darya we now know. In the World Cup, she for the first time competed with the established legends of the world biathlon. But German Magdalena Neuner got first place back then while our time was still ahead.

February 11, 2014, is a date that the whole country remembers. Being ninth after the sprint, Darya Domracheva made a real feat - in the pursuit, she rose to first place and brought Belarus a gold medal.

Back then no one could think that in a week, she will already bear the title of a three-time Olympic champion. Domracheva wins all the remaining individual races of the Olympics and gets the famous nickname "Our golden Dasha."

In Sochi, the biathlete was supported by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, from whose hands the biathlete later got the title of the Hero of Belarus.

After such a resounding success at the Olympic Games in Sochi, the athlete became really popular in the world and is now the face and pride of Belarus.

Thanks to Dasha, Belarusian biathlon was brought to a whole new level. And our biathlete school is considered one of the best in the world.

Meanwhile, Dasha still wanted to win one award - the Big Crystal Globe.

The track in Khanty-Mansiysk was the last barrier to the crystal top. The penultimate race. Pursuit. Domracheva has a strong lead and is approaching the firing range preparing to shoot. But this time, fans did not allow her to repeat the curious mistake she made seven years ago. Later in an interview, the biathlete admitted that she heard the crowd. The stands shouted in unison: Dasha, lie down!

And now the final race - mass start. Thirty biathletes are in pursuit of medals. And only two of them could win the Big Crystal Globe, which in the end was won by Belarus. Domracheva won first place in the World Cup overall standings.

At the award ceremony, not hiding her charming smile, Darya Domracheva rejoices as a child.

Fragile and very charming, she, like a real fighter, overcame 10 stages, covered hundreds of miles and hit thousands of targets. We cheered for Dasha, we were happy, and we won with her. A great triumph for Darya Domracheva and a big win for Belarus. Now, "Our golden Dasha" also has a crystal frame.
