Belarus starts in Fed Cup against Georgia

The women's tennis team of Belarus has started today their matches of the 1st group of Euro-African zone of the Fed Cup in Budapest. In the first match of the preliminary Group C Belarusians play against Georgia.

After a three-year hiatus, the best Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka (world number 49) will play for Belarus. Before the competition in the Hungarian capital, the Belarus team leader noted that it was time to get to the Fed Cup's World Group. Last time the Belarusian tennis players got there in 2011 after beating Estonia in Minsk 5:0. Azarenka also played in those matches.

In addition to Victoria Azarenka, the Belarus captain Tatiana Poutchek's squad includes Alexandra Sasnovich (145), Olga Govortsova (156) and 16-year-old Vera Lapko (838), who replaced injured Irina Shimanovich (441).

At the first stage of the competition in Budapest, the Belarusian tennis players will also play against Bulgaria (February 5) and Portugal (February 6). In the current ranking of women's teams Belarus now occupies 24th place, with Portugal being 32nd position, Bulgaria 36th, and Georgia 39th.

The compositions of other groups:

A - Austria, Hungary, Serbia;

B - United Kingdom, Liechtenstein, Turkey, Ukraine;

D - Belgium, Israel, Latvia, Croatia.

After the group tournaments, only group winners will enter the playoff round: the best team in Group A will play a representative of section D, while the other game will feature the winners of groups B and C.

The winners of these matches will compete for the right to play in the 2nd World Cup group of the Fed Cup next season.
