Wilhelm Kube and Heinrich Himmler in Minsk during WWII

We are still not aware in full about Wilhelm Kube’s stay in Minsk. Few people know that Heinrich Himmler, who was considered the most fearsome after Adolf Hitler, visited Minsk.

Arthur Nebe, the commanding officer of Einsatzgruppe B, welcomed Heinrich Himmler, the leader of German punitive instrument, at the Minsk airport. Heinrich Himmler had a rich program of his stay in Minsk. He visited the Soviet State art gallery, the Opera House and the village of Novinki. Himmler expressed a desire to observe the execution of the Minsk Ghetto prisoners.

Who knew that Himmler would feel sick at the sight of blood? He shouted at SS-men, blamed them for hit-and-miss gunnery, and went into hysterics. He came back to Berlin and made an order to weaken moral suffering of prisoners.

The German general commissariat functioned in Minsk from 1941 till 1943. Wilhelm Kube had several residences: on Engelsa Street, in the village of Drozdy, in the village of Priluki, and in the Loshitsa manor.

Wilhelm Kube lived in a house next to Yanchevski’s house. According to the documents, Yanchevski’s house was very nice. It was located on a picturesque hill. The walls were about two meters thick. Every floor was warmed by seven massive heaters. It had plumbing, toilets, bathrooms, and electricity.

Wilhelm Kube preferred to live near his workplace. That’s why he chose Yanchevski’s house. He liked the walls and the trees. The house was overbuilt in 1943 and had special protection for unexpected air strikes.

Another little-known residence is located in Akhmet Ofly’s house in Minsk. Its purpose is still not clear. Wilhelm Kube was killed on 22 September. After the Second World War, the house was transferred to the Yanka Kupala Museum. It was demolished in 1976.
