Belarus enacts alternative service law

A law on alternative service came into force Belarus. The innovation may be used by people who declare that they cannot carry weapons or participate in the maintenance of military equipment, which is contrary to their religious beliefs.

Each case will be considered by conscription boards, which may invite representatives of religious organizations.

People who refuse to serve the Fatherland will serve the public good. They work in hospitals, social establishments, help construct and repair roads and work for housing and communal services organizations.

We add that there are not so many people in Belarus who are willing to use the right for alternative service. Over the past three years, 60 people declared their wish to undergo alternative service.
